Now booking weddings for 2025 & 2026

Choosing the right wedding photographer is crucial because these photos will be cherished memories of your big day. While the process can seem overwhelming, breaking it down into manageable steps can help you find the perfect match! Here’s a guide to help you navigate this important decision of how to choose a wedding photographer:

Determine Your Style

Before you start your search, it’s essential to decide on the style of photography you prefer. Wedding photography styles range from candid and photojournalistic to fine art and traditional posed shots. Spend some time browsing wedding blogs, Pinterest, and Instagram to gather inspiration and identify what appeals to you.

  • Photojournalistic/Documentary: Captures candid, unposed moments, giving a natural and organic feel to the photos.
  • Fine Art: These images are often dramatic and artistic, focusing on composition, lighting, and creativity.
  • Traditional: Classic and posed, these photos include formal shots of the couple, wedding party, and family.
  • Editorial: Mimics the look of fashion magazines with a polished and stylized approach.

These different styles don’t have to be exclusive to each other either. Personally I operate in a Photojournalistic/Documentary style of wedding photography but I also include posed family photos, as well as editorial style black and white images that you’d hope to find in a magazine! Take a look at my wedding portfolio to understand how this could work for you. I don’t typically work in a fine art style, but there are plenty of photographers who do! Start Your Search

Once you know your preferred style, begin looking for photographers who specialize in that style. Use wedding websites, social media, and ask for recommendations from friends and family to discover potential photographers. The best way to start is with Instagram, or just search things like ‘Berkshire Wedding Photographer’ or ‘Documentary Style Wedding Photographers’

Check Reviews and Portfolios

Once you’ve found a few photographers you like the look of, check out their reviews and testimonials from previous clients. These provide valuabe insight into a photographer’s professionalism and reliability, and how other couples have liked them! Look at their portfolios to ensure their style aligns with your vision – look for full wedding galleries, not just their main portfolio, to get a comprehensive understanding of their work.

Speak with Potential Photographers

Meeting with potential photographers is a crucial step. Enquire with them through their websites to discuss your wedding details and expectations. Ask to see full galleries of weddings they have photographed, especially ones similar to yours in terms of venue and style. This will give you a clearer idea of what to expect.

Questions to Ask:

  • How would you describe your photography style?
  • Have you shot at our venue before?
  • Can we see a full gallery from a recent wedding?
  • What is included in your packages?

Understand their Packages

Photographers offer various packages that can include different levels of coverage, second shooters, engagement sessions, albums, and prints. Make sure you understand what each package includes and what additional costs might be involved. Personally I only offer full-day wedding coverage as it’s the best way to capture the whole story! Other photographers may offer shorter packages, and so it’s important to know that they allign with what you need.

Discuss Your Budget

Wedding photography can be a significant investment, so it’s essential to discuss your budget upfront. Prices can vary widely depending on the photographer’s experience, location, and package details. Be honest about your budget and see if there is room for negotiation or customization of packages. Most photographers should have their pricing on their website, so that you can get an idea of costings – but it never hurts to ask for a quote

Compatibility and Comfort

Your photographer will be with you throughout your wedding day, so it’s important that you feel comfortable with them. During your calls, consider whether their personality and demeanor are a good fit for you and your fiancé. You should feel at ease and confident in their ability to capture your day! Ensure you connect with them and can laugh with them before booking them I say!

Consider Including an Engagement Shoot

An engagement shoot is a great way to get to know your photographer and become comfortable in front of the camera. It’s also an opportunity to see how the photographer works and if their style truly matches your vision. I’ve written a post about whether or not you should book an engagement shoot – click here to read it!

Review the Contract

Before signing a contract, carefully review all the terms and conditions. Ensure it covers the date, hours of coverage, deliverables, payment schedule, and cancellation policies. Clarify any questions or concerns you may have to avoid any misunderstandings later.

Trust Your Instincts

After all the research, meetings, and reviews, trust your instincts! That’s what it boils down to when thinking about how to choose a wedding photographer. Choose the photographer who not only meets your technical and artistic needs but also feels like the right fit for you and your wedding day. By following these steps, you can find a wedding photographer who will capture your special day beautifully, providing you with memories to cherish for a lifetime. Trust your instincts.
